Notes for Maurizio (Morris) POZZI
Morris Pozzi was born in Giumaglio, Switzerland which is located several towns upstream from Gordevio. According to census records, Morris immigrated to Goleta, California in 1872. He married Marianna Vanoni in about 1878 and their first child, Celestina, was born in Santa Barbara in 1879. By 1880 he was already established as a dairy farmer in Bodega, California as shown in the 1880 US Census.
At the time of the 1890 census, he and Marianna, Victor, James, and Ernest were all living with Morris’s older brother, Carlo, at his ranch in Valley Ford, California. Carlo was married to Giuditta Vanoni, the twin sister of Marianna’s mother. Ed Vanoni, Marianna’s youngest brother was also living at the same ranch.
Shortly after1900, the family moved to Santa Barbara where they had a bar.
Notes for Marianna Celestina (Spouse 1)
Marianna landed in New York on July 26, 1877 and married Morris Pozzi in about 1878. Their first child, Celestina, was born in October 1879, and, at the time of the 1880 US Census, she and Morris were shown as living in Bodega, California.
Living in Bodega with her and her husband, Morris, were two Vanoni relatives, as indicated by the 1880 census. They were Kattie, age 22, and Battista Bartolomeo (Robert), age 23. Kattie (probably not spelled correctly) was listed as a servant, and Battista was listed as a laborer. Robert later moved to Westport and eventually to Lakeport, California, about 40 miles northeast of Santa Rosa.
Another Vanoni (Charles, age 24) from Aurigeno was also working on the John Cerene’s Bodega ranch in 1880. He was probably also related to Marianna Vanoni.
The 1900 Census shows that Marianna and Morris had 7 children, only 4 of whom were still living in 1900.
